Artist Statement:

Expression vs. Invasion is a statement made to evoke the audience to make a choice about their personal views on this subject. Our group picked this specific issue because we find it to be a topic that everyone here at the University of Arizona faces daily. Each member of our group has a different opinion on this issue, but we wanted this blog to be cause awareness.

Our title was the result of finding strong words that are stated in the Constitution. The Constitution states that we have the right to freedom of speech, but it also declares that as an individual you have the right to your own privacy. To us, the word expression means no limitations. It gives the person expressing the freedom to say what they please. The word invasion was chosen to convey a feeling of violation. It means that the person clearly feels uncomfortable with what is being done to them. Both of these words show why this issue is so important to us as students on a college campus.

We chose these particular photographs to allow the audience to engage in our blog. We picked two obvious pictures so that our topic would directly relate to what we were trying to express. They are real life situations of students trying to communicate their opinions on their peers. For example, the second photo is portraying a student who is irritated with a man who approached him on the mall. The student was clearly not comfortable with the situation he was put into and walked away. To counteract the obvious photographs we chose photographs that were metaphors to cause the audience to develop their personal feelings. For example, the fourth photograph which shows a doorknob, which is a metaphor for privacy. The fact that it is blurred shows confusion. The doorknob is to show how free people want privacy and not to be approached.

This issue of freedom of speech and invasion of privacy is clearly predominate on any college campus. We hope that while enjoying our blog, different questions were going through your mind. Questions of CHOICE, AWARNESS, INVASION, VIEWS and FEELINGS. Through these questions hopefully you were able to formulate an opinion about this issue.
